Taking Back Sunday, "Where You Want to Be"

so as my friends know a few weeks back, i got an advanced copy of Taking Back Sunday's new full length, Where You Want to Be. well, i decided that since a lot of people who look at my journal are into TBS, i'd post a review for the CD, song-by-song, so you can at least have my opinion before you go out and get your own copy of the record on July 27th. so here it is:

Taking Back Sunday, "Where You Want to Be"
2004 Victory Records
Release: Tuesday, July 27th 2004

The second major label release from Taking Back Sunday titled Where You Want to Be is no Tell All Your Friends. The band has subtly changed their sound and is essentially a new band from the one that recorded TAYF. With only 2 remaining members from the debut CD, the sounds that this new band have created are definitely a makeover from previous songs. The sound isn't harder or softer, better or worse, faster or slower, it's just... different.

The record begins with a cool track titled Set Phasers to Stun in which the distortion of the guitars sounds almost like techno, it definitely shows the growth of the band and how their sounds have changed. The lyrics include the title of the CD, "So pace the stairs to your apartment; That's where you want to be." The song is very guitar-driven. It's stylish and is definitely a good choice to open the album with. The song is followed by the first new single, Bonus Mosh pt. II which was originally a B-Side to Tell All Your Friends. This track is one of the best on the album and you can hear traces of TAYF in this one. Smart lyrics and cool guitar lines. Next is A Decade Under the Influence, also a single off of the CD. A Decade is much softer and melody-driven with a pop-like sound. A very radio friendly track, but it's still very enjoyable. This Photograph is the Proof is next, which was a track used in the movie Spider-Man 2, this is another pop-ish track driven by smooth melodies and cool lyrics. This track is remenicent of Tell All Your Friends in the way that the bridge is one of the most important and most memorable parts of the song. The next song is The Union, this is where the album gets a little faster and a bit more hard with some metal-like guitar lines and very cool lyrics and screams, "Well, I never made a scene; They came to me." New American Classic is the next track and for many will be the first acoustic track heard from TBS. The sound and the lyrics are very different from their style and it almost interupts the CD. This track features a string section from a cello and violins. I am Fred Astaire compliments the previous track very well, it sounds like it takes the previous song and speeds it up. This track is very cool. One-Eighty by Summer is next and has some stylish lines. This song will be a lot of people's favorite. Number Five with a Bullet is my personal favorite, it has with a synthesizer in the background which is very hip. The song is very upbeat and is guaranteed to remind you of your first heartbreak. The next track is Little Devotional which is a great song. The guitar lines are some of the best on the album and the drums will get your feet tapping. Awesome track. The final official track is "...Slowdance on the Inside" which was originally written by John Nolan (former frontman of TBS) but John left the band before it was ever recorded, so here is your first chance (outside of the shows) to hear his lyrical genious on a great track. The song is drum and bass driven, and is one of the greatest tracks TBS has ever put together. And finally, for those of you who want to know about the special B-Side, the re-recording of TBS's first acoustic, "Your Own Disaster:" the song was original recorded as a B-Side to the first major CD, "Tell All Your Friends," but this was during a period when the band had no drummer and so in order to get it out before the album shipped, the song was recorded as an acoustic, and then later, electronic drums were added. The song didn't make it onto the album and the original is now a rare B-Side and is considered one of TBS's best songs. That said, the band decided that the song deserved to be re-recorded the way it was supposed to be made with real drums and Adam (TBS's new vocalist and frontman) on vocals. We'll have to wait until July 20th to hear the new re-recorded version which is set to be the 12th track on the Japanese release of the CD. For now, here is my rating of the album

9/10
Very enjoyable, and easy to listen to. This cd is very cool, even if it includes some tracks which you're almost sure to see on TRL, definitely pick up a copy.

Track Listing:
1.) Set Phasers to Stun
2.) Bonus Mosh pt. II

I'm comfortably confused, and you've gotten so removed

its been a while, but im not gonna recap everything, just the important stuff. i broke my leg while skating the north reading park a few days back. bummer. but i still get to chill with my friends and shiz, so its not all bad. i got a few cool gifts and some cash out of it too. i wont be skating for at least a month which really sucks cause i was on sort of a run with my skating, learning new tricks and start to step it up. oh well, i'll be able to skate in the fall which is my favorite time to skate anyway. oh yeah, and that's the big news: im not quitting, which was what my friends were worried about. as soon as these bones heal up, im gonna be out there doing even crazier shit than i was before, i cant wait. so besides that, we've been writing for adelaide and we're gonna start practice next week. i'll be handling bass and vocals, bryan will be playing lead guitar and vocals, john will be on backup guitar, and mark is drumming. i think that Ashfield is over, so we'll be able to concentrate on Adelaide and get some really good stuff down.. we're hoping to drop an EP in late september. i guess that's it. later, yo

I'll keep my jealousy close cause it's all mine

alright, my other image wasn't working correctly, so I decided to add yet another new picture to my heading. the band is Further Seems Forever, i got the picture from their website and used a photo editor to give it a warm, soft hue. i think it looks really cool. not much to update about. me and bryan skipped 4th block yesterday and painted the skatepark which wasnt a too bad way to spend our afternoon. it was fun. i think i'm gonna go to the opening next Tuesday. i'm gonna see if meri wants to do something this weekend, cause we're kinda back on speaking terms. i dont even think she noticed that we ever weren't on speaking terms. besides that, finals are almost done- monday's my last day of sophmore year! hell's yeah, nooka. i dunno what i'm doing tonight. probably not skating, cause it's fucking raining. pretty gay. i dunno, we'll figure something out. oh yeah, and happy 16th birthday to mark. oh shit, i almost forgot, i'm going to the warped tour for free! i'm gonna be working at the Player420 clothing booth. if you're gonna be there, make sure you stop by!

You've got me right where you want me...

okay, so i broke my blogdrive heading while trying to make it more "summer" feeling. so while i was fixing it, i decided to add a whole new heading. if you don't recognize the band in the photo, it's Taking Back Sunday (i kinda went overboard with the whole b/w and negative colors, but i think it came out slick.) i also now have a custom heading with my blogdrive's name on it! pretty hip, right? you know it. so yesterday kinda sucked. i was going to do something with meri but she was in new hampshire for the whole day at her cousin's(?) wedding... i think it was her cousin at least. so since i didnt know she wasn't coming home, i didnt bother to make any other plans so i pretty much just sat around all day. me and mark made a funbox on friday. its pretty sick, it has a metal siding and we're trying to attach a rail to the opposite side, but i dont think that's gonna work out. i started writing with ashfield on saturday and we practiced 2 new songs- the used, "buried myself alive" and thrice, "the artist in the ambulence." i think they're coming out well. last full week of school, i'm stoked for summer. me and mark are gonna skip the last day to skate boston. thats gonna be a lot of fun! i cant wait. we'll probably bring john and bryan along too. im hoping to hang out with meri before school ends, that way itll be easier on both of us if we want to hang out this summer. i dont have much else to write about except that Adelaide is going to get underway soon. once rustin leaves for... wherever he's going. we already have some good ideas, so ill keep everyone updated on that. later, yo.

All hail the heartbreaker

alright, no matter how much bryan doesn't want to admit it, people are really pissed at him. with good reason. he takes veronica away from rustin, then when he has veronica he decides that he doesnt want to be with her, so he dumps her. yeah, pretty gay thing to do. the worst part about this is, both rustin and veronica still think he's SO great. i'm not pissed at him at all, i just lost all respect for him. i can't even say he's my friend anymore. because he's not, i'd never have anything to do with someone like that. yeah, that's how wrong this seems to me. its just the most low thing he could've ever done. you fucked up bad, bryan... you're so god damned selfish. maybe someday he'll do something to make it right, but i highly, highly doubt that.

....yeah, 3 in a day

okay, somehow something that i thought would totally piss meri off and screw me over worse than i was before (why'd i still say it? cause it needed to be said, that's why) turned into something really good that got at least a little bit of this mess straightened out and started to get us back on track and not just trying to avoid each other. i actually feel better...

Well, if you wanted honestly, that's all you had to say

wait, what? im okay? what the hell was i thinking, im not okay... this is just going to make it next to impossible to trust anyone again. i was down and then i just got thrown on my face. this is so bad. this is gonna hurt me so much in the long run. i dont know how im gonna trust anyone anymore. why didnt i see it this time? i continue to trust these people and then i just get fucked in the end. im so god damned stupid... i just wanted to see something there. fuck it, i'm done................................
